Looking Back on 2022: A Year of Resilience, Growth & Community at Duino Coffeehouse
As we reflect on 2022, one word comes to mind: gratitude.
After two years of uncertainty and COVID-19 restrictions, we finally began seeing a return to something we had deeply missed: our community. Duino Coffeehouse once again became a place where coworkers gathered over coffee, students studied for hours, entrepreneurs built businesses, and friends met for meaningful conversations.
Watching our coffeehouse come back to life reminded us why we opened our doors in the first place.
Navigating a New Set of Challenges
Although the pandemic was slowly fading into the background, 2022 introduced a completely different set of obstacles.
Global supply chain disruptions and rising inflation affected nearly every aspect of our business. Everyday essentials, including paper cups, espresso machine parts, eggs, avocados, tomatoes, lettuce, and countless other ingredients—became increasingly difficult to source or dramatically more expensive.
Running a neighborhood coffee shop suddenly required constant creativity.
Recipes had to be adjusted. Processes had to evolve. Vendors changed. Deliveries were delayed. Some customer favorites had to be paused because ingredients simply weren't available or had become prohibitively expensive.
Behind the scenes, our incredible team adapted with resilience, flexibility, and an unwavering commitment to quality.
While many businesses responded by significantly increasing prices, we worked tirelessly to absorb as much of the increased cost as possible. Thanks to careful planning and operational improvements, we were able to keep most of our menu pricing largely unchanged while continuing to invest in better products and exceptional service.
New Drinks, New Favorites
Even in the face of these challenges, innovation never stopped.
Throughout the year, we introduced several new handcrafted specialty drinks and menu items that quickly became customer favorites.
If you ask me, the Black Sesame Hojicha Latte still deserves a spot in our Hall of Fame. 😍
One of the things we love most about specialty coffee is the opportunity to continually explore new flavors, ingredients, and brewing techniques while creating drinks that are uniquely Duino.
Building Community One Event at a Time
Duino has always been about much more than coffee.
Our mission has never been simply to serve exceptional beverages, it has been to create a place where strangers become friends.
In 2022, that mission came to life more than ever.
We celebrated our third year of hosting Cars & Coffee, and what started as a small gathering has grown into one of McKinney's favorite monthly community events.
Our May event welcomed more than 110 incredible vehicles, coming within just 15 cars of filling our entire parking lot. (We'll keep that little detail between us. 😉)
We also launched Bikes & Brews, creating another opportunity for enthusiasts to connect over their shared passions.
Inside the coffeehouse, our walls became a gallery for creativity as we hosted exhibitions featuring seven talented local artists. Better yet, every artist kept 100% of their sales because we believe supporting local creators should never come with a commission.
Watching friendships form over coffee, cars, motorcycles, and art continues to be one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.
Expanding the Duino Family
One of the biggest milestones of the year was opening our second location.
In 2022, we proudly introduced Duino Coffee Bar at Cottonwood Creek Church in McKinnney, Texas.
Our new espresso bar was embraced by the community from day one. Although it had been open for less than three months by year's end, it was already showing tremendous promise and introducing a whole new community to the Duino experience.
Celebrating Personal Victories
Beyond the coffeehouse, 2022 gave our family many reasons to celebrate.
The greatest of these was Asil reaching one year cancer-free, a milestone that filled us with gratitude and hope. Watching her regain strength throughout the year has been nothing short of inspiring.
We're equally proud of our children, who each faced their own challenges and grew stronger, more confident, and more resilient because of them.
Sometimes life's biggest victories happen quietly, and this year reminded us to celebrate every single one.
Looking Ahead to 2023
It's hard to believe that Duino Coffeehouse would soon celebrate its fourth anniversary.
As we looked toward 2023, we weren't simply thinking about growing—we were thinking about improving.
Our focus was clear:
Deliver an even more consistent coffee experience.
Improve speed without sacrificing quality.
Strengthen our leadership team.
Invest in world-class barista training.
Continue making Duino one of the best places to work.
Listen carefully to every piece of customer feedback.
Build an even stronger community around great coffee.
Because no matter how much we grow, our mission remains exactly the same:
Creating a place where strangers become friends.
Thank You for Being Part of Our Story
Every latte served, every conversation shared, every community event attended, and every recommendation you've made to friends and family has helped shape Duino Coffeehouse into what it is today.
Supporting a locally owned coffee shop means far more than buying a cup of coffee.
It means supporting local jobs, local artists, local events, local suppliers, and the small businesses that make our community unique.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for believing in us, encouraging us, and allowing us to be part of your daily lives.
We truly couldn't have done it without you.
Here's to another year of exceptional coffee, meaningful conversations, and unforgettable memories.
