How Duino Coffeehouse Turned a Global Crisis into an Opportunity for Growth

Originally published on LinkedIn on June 27, 2021. Updated for the Duino Coffeehouse Journal.

When people ask us how Duino Coffeehouse survived the COVID-19 pandemic, they're usually expecting a story about government programs, cost-cutting, or luck.

The truth is much simpler.

We chose to invest in our community when everything around us was telling businesses to retreat.

Looking back today, COVID-19 didn't define Duino Coffeehouse, it revealed who we were.

A Dream That Was Nearly Cut Short

Duino Coffeehouse officially opened its doors in February 2019 with one simple mission: To create a place where strangers become friends.

We envisioned more than a coffee shop. We wanted a neighborhood gathering place where people could connect over specialty coffee, handcrafted food, local art, and meaningful conversations.

Just two weeks after celebrating our first anniversary, the world changed.

Shelter-in-place orders swept across Texas.

Like thousands of independent restaurants and coffee shops, we suddenly found ourselves staring at an uncertain future.

We had roughly two weeks of working capital. We had only recently become cash-flow positive. We didn't have the financial resources, brand recognition, or operational maturity of national chains.

On paper, the odds weren't in our favor.

But giving up was never part of our story.

Instead of asking...

"How do we survive?"

...we asked a different question:

"How can we become even more valuable to our community?"

That single question changed everything.

Three Principles That Guided Every Decision

Rather than reacting to the crisis one day at a time, we committed ourselves to three guiding principles that continue to shape Duino Coffeehouse today.

1. Stay Relevant

Closing our doors, even temporarily, would have been the easiest decision.

It also would have removed us from the daily lives of our customers during a time when connection mattered most.

We believed our role extended beyond serving coffee.

Our community needed hope, consistency, and a familiar place that continued showing up every day.

Remaining open allowed Duino to remain part of our customers' stories when they needed us most.

2. Stay Flexible

The pandemic forced every business to rethink its assumptions.

Instead of clinging to our original business plan, we embraced change.

Every challenge became an opportunity to improve our menu, rethink our operations, and create new experiences for our customers.

Innovation wasn't optional, it became our competitive advantage.

3. Put People First

Nothing mattered more than the well-being of our crew, customers, and community.

Safety wasn't simply about complying with public health guidance.

It was about earning trust.

Every decision we made was measured against one simple question:

Does this make people feel safer, cared for, and valued?

Finding Our Voice

During difficult times, people remember how you make them feel.

Rather than adding to the constant stream of fear and uncertainty, we wanted Duino to become a source of optimism.

Our message became simple:

Rise Up

Those two words guided our communication throughout the pandemic.

Every social media post, every customer interaction, and every campaign carried the same message of resilience, hope, and community.

We wanted to become an oasis of optimism during one of the most challenging periods our community had ever experienced.

Strengthening Our Community

Community has always been at the heart of Duino Coffeehouse.

COVID simply gave us new ways to live that mission.

The White Cup Challenge

One initiative we're especially proud of was the White Cup Challenge, where customers decorated our paper coffee cups with messages of encouragement and hope.

Every cup sold raised money for a local food pantry.

The campaign reminded us that even small acts of kindness can have a profound impact.

Supporting Our Healthcare Heroes

We partnered with local organizations and community leaders to provide coffee and meals to doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers serving on the front lines.

It was our small way of saying thank you to those who were risking everything for our community.

Standing Together

When our nation faced difficult conversations around racial justice, we hosted a socially distanced candlelight vigil and outdoor benefit concert supporting the National Urban League.

Our goal wasn't simply to stay in business.

It was to remain a positive force within our community.

Taking Care of Our Crew

Perhaps the accomplishment we're proudest of had nothing to do with sales.

We didn't lay off a single crew member.

In fact, we created five additional jobs during one of the most difficult periods the restaurant industry has ever experienced.

Maintaining employment wasn't always the easiest financial decision.

But it was the right one.

The loyalty, dedication, and resilience our team demonstrated throughout the pandemic became one of Duino's greatest strengths.

Raising the Standard for Safety

Trust had to be earned every single day.

We introduced:

  • Enhanced food safety procedures

  • Frequent crew wellness check-ins

  • Flexible sick leave policies

  • Rigorous sanitization protocols

  • Comprehensive response plans should anyone become ill

These initiatives required additional investment, but they reassured both our crew and our customers that their well-being came first.

Looking back, that investment paid dividends far beyond the pandemic.

Reinventing Our Menu

Customer behavior changed almost overnight.

People wanted fewer shopping trips and more complete meal solutions.

Rather than remaining a traditional coffee shop, we expanded into a full café experience.

Our menu grew to include:

  • Fresh breakfast sandwiches

  • Panini

  • Quesadillas

  • Desserts

  • Expanded lunch offerings

Many of these additions remain customer favorites today.

Breakfast in Bed

One of our most memorable initiatives was our Breakfast in Bed bundles for Mother's Day and Father's Day.

Within hours, more than 75 packages had been pre-ordered.

What we expected to be simple curbside pickup turned into something much more meaningful.

Cars filled our parking lot.

Music played loud!

Families smiled.

Neighbors reconnected.

For a brief moment, our parking lot became a celebration of hope during an incredibly difficult year.

Creating New Revenue Streams

Innovation extended beyond the menu.

One of our most successful ideas was our Daily Delivery Subscription.

Customers prepaid for two weeks of handcrafted drinks delivered directly to their homes each morning.

It became a true win-win.

  • Customers enjoyed convenience.

  • Our crew stayed busy and motivated.

  • Duino generated the predictable cash flow needed to navigate uncertainty.

Sometimes the best ideas emerge during the most difficult times.

Investing in Technology

Without a drive-thru, convenience became even more important.

Fortunately, we had already begun testing online ordering before the pandemic.

Within days, we accelerated deployment and launched:

  • Online ordering

  • Curbside pickup

  • Local delivery

Technology allowed us to compete with much larger national brands while preserving the personalized service that defines Duino Coffeehouse.

The Results

By August 2020, Duino Coffeehouse had returned to profitability.

The numbers told an incredible story:

  • 2020 sales finished 32% higher than 2019

  • 2021 was on pace for nearly 60% year-over-year growth when this article was originally published

But numbers tell only part of the story.

COVID challenged every assumption we held about running a coffeehouse.

It forced us to become more innovative, more agile, and more connected to our community than ever before.

Many of the ideas born during that period continue shaping Duino today.

What We Learned

Looking back, we realize COVID wasn't simply a test of our business model.

It was a test of our purpose.

We discovered that coffee is about much more than what's inside the cup.

It's about creating connection.

It's about serving others.

It's about showing up when your community needs you most.

That philosophy continues guiding everything we do.

Whether we're introducing a new seasonal latte, hosting Cars & Coffee, supporting local artists, or simply remembering a customer's favorite drink, we're still pursuing the same mission we started with in 2019:

Creating a place where strangers become friends.

Thank You

To every customer who ordered curbside, purchased a gift card, participated in one of our community initiatives, tipped our crew, shared our story, or simply chose to support a local coffee shop during one of the most uncertain periods in modern history—

Thank you.

You weren't just supporting a coffee shop.

You were preserving local jobs.

You were strengthening our community.

You were helping keep a dream alive.

Because of you, Duino Coffeehouse didn't simply survive.

We emerged stronger, more resilient, and more committed than ever to serving our community.

From the bottom of our hearts...

Thank you for believing in us.
